About the Workshop

​

In this hands-on 3-day workshop, participants will explore Gum Oil Printing, an alternative photographic process combining gum bichromate techniques with oil-based pigments. This method, which emerged in the early 20th century, yields rich, textural prints and emphasizes hand manipulation, allowing for a high degree of artistic control and uniqueness.

 

Day-Wise Schedule

Day 1 – Introduction, Coating & Test Prints

​

10:30 AM – 1:00 PM

• Welcome and overview of gum oil printing

• History, material orientation, and safety guidance

• Introduction to digital positives (transparencies)

• Paper preparation: sizing and hardening with gelatin

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Lunch Break

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

• Coating paper with gum bichromate-pigment mixture

• Drying procedures and setup

• Coating paper for test prints

 

Day 2 – Exposure, Development & Printing

10:30 AM – 1:00 PM

• UV exposure of coated prints using digital positives

• Development using water and brush technique

• Evaluation of test prints, discussion of contrast and tone

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Lunch Break

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

• Application of oil paint to developed prints

• Techniques for inking and wiping for tonal control

• Drying and preparation for final prints

 

Day 3 – Final Printing & Presentation

 

10:30 AM – 1:00 PM

• Final exposures and printing

• inking methods for highlights and shadow detail

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Lunch Break

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

• Final print finishing and documentation

• Group sharing and discussion of process challenges

• Tips for continuing gum oil printing independently

 

Materials Provided

• All essential chemicals and supplies

• 10 sheets of 11 x 14 inch paper, including test sheets

• Oil paints, brushes, trays, and tools

• Access to a fully equipped studio

 

Additional Notes

• Personal oil color tubes, if preferred, especially specific shades they wish to use. While basic shades of oil colours will be provided, personal favorite shades or brands are welcome to enhance creative expression.

• Digital positive transparencies are not included and must be arranged externally. Studio A89 will help coordinate the process if needed.

• Participants are encouraged to bring:

  • Notebook, pen/pencil

  • Apron, gloves, and a generic surgical mask (recommended for chemical handling)

• Lunch is not provided. Food and accommodation must be arranged individually.
